Ranger Cabins
In the early 1900's, park rangers travelled on foot and by canoe through the park in search of poachers. Cabins were built throughout the park to house equipment and provide a more comfortable place to stay while the rangers were on duty. As the management practices of the park changed, the cabins saw less and less use and fell into disrepair.
Algonquin Park has repaired a number of the cabins and established the cabin rental program. People can now rent cabins for a night or even a week at a time. The cabins offer visitors the chance to experience a little park history while enjoying a more convenient outdoor accommodation. Most cabins are equipped with a wood stove, table, chairs and bed frames.
There are three fantastic refurbished cabins that are accessible from the Shall Lake access point. If you are looking for a little different Algonquin adventure, consider renting one of the three historic old ranger cabins. Reservations must be made through Ontario Parks at (888) ONT-PARK.
Kitty Lake Cabin
This one room cabin can be reached within an hour paddle from the Shall Lake access point. It was constructed in 1935 and is one of the largest cabins available in the park. The cabin actually sits on Farm Lake and offers plenty of fishing opportunities in the many nearby lakes. Up to eight people can be accommodated.

McKaskill Lake Cabin
This one room log cabin was built in 1932 and sits on the grand McKaskill Lake. From the Shall Lake access, it is a day's travel to the cabin. Fishing is the main attraction, but for the more adventurous, there are also several other lakes visitors can explore within a portage or two from McKaskill Lake.

Tattler Lake Cabin
The cabin at Tattler Lake was originally constructed as a shelter for the person who manned a nearby fire tower. It is estimated that the cabin was built around the time the tower was erected in 1932. Since those days, the cabin has been significantly repaired. Today, it is a great location to enjoy Tattler Lake. Access to the cabin is via an easy one day canoe trip from the Shall Lake access point.
